Economics Major Requirements
BACHELOR’S DEGREE IN ECONOMICS
A = Bachelor of Arts course

PREREQUISITES
ECON2001.01 (principles of microeconomics) -3 credits
MATH 1130A or MATH1148A (or higher) – 3 to 4 credits or MATH1151S (or higher) – 3 to 4 credits
STAT 1450A or ECON 3400A (or higher level of Statistics) – 3 to 4 credits
STAT 2450S (or higher level of Statistics) – 3 credits
MAJOR CORE REQUIREMENTS
ECON 2002.01 (Principles of Macroeconomics) – 3 credits
ECON 4001.01A/.02S (Intermediate Microeconomic Theory) – 3 credits
ECON 4002.01A/.02S (Intermediate Macroeconomic Theory) – 3 credits
ECON 4400A (Elementary Econometrics) – 3 credits
ECON 5410S (Econometrics 1) – 3 credits
ECON 5420S (Econometrics 2) – 3 credits
*The .01 versions of Intermediate Micro- and Macroeconomics denote an algebra-based course for Bachelor of Arts students, whereas the .02 versions denote a calculus-based course for Bachelor of Science students.
MAJOR ELECTIVE REQUIREMENTS
ECON3000+ level electives (NOT3400 or 4400)-9 credits, 3 courses
ECON5000 level electives (except 5410 and 5420)– 6 credits, 2 courses
MAJOR WRITING/THOUGHT REQUIREMENT
ECON 2367.02 (Current Economic Issues in the United States) – 3 credits or ECON 5130 (Economic History of Western Europe) – 4 credits or ECON 5140 (Economic History of the United States) – 4 credits
Major Writing or Thought Course: *The Economics Department sets this requirement because many of the jobs that economics majors take require writing skills on economic subjects. Since many of the Department’s courses are oriented toward problem-solving and involve little writing, it is helpful for majors to get this additional experience in writing on economic topics.

ECONOMICS MINOR REQUIREMENTS
MINOR IN ECONOMICS
The Economics minor consists of 15 to 17 credit hours. Courses at the 1000 level do not count toward the minor.
MINOR CORE REQUIREMENTS
ECON 2001 (2001.01, 2001.02, or 2001.03H), Principles of Microeconomics, 3 credits
ECON 2002 (2002.01, 2002.02, or 2002.03H), Principles of Macroeconomics, 3 credits
One of the following courses, 3 credits:
- ECON 4001 (4001.01, 4001.02, or 4001.03), Intermediate Microeconomic Theory
- ECON 4002 (4002.01, 4002.02, or 4002.03), Intermediate Macroeconomic Theory
- ECON 4400, Elementary Econometrics
MINOR ELECTIVE REQUIREMENTS
Complete two additional Economics courses, each worth 3 or 4 credit hours, at the 3000 level or above.
ECON 3400 and ECON 4320 may not be used as minor electives.
ADDITIONAL PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS
- No more than 3 credit hours of ECON 5193 and/or ECON 5194 may count toward the minor.
- ECON 5797 may count only with permission from the Director of Undergraduate Studies.
- Up to 6 total credit hours of transfer credit and/or examination credit may count toward the minor.
- Up to 6 credit hours may overlap with General Education requirements.
- The minor must be in a subject different from the student’s major.
- At least 12 credit hours must be distinct from the student’s major and any other minor.
GRADE REQUIREMENTS
- A minimum grade of C- is required for a course to count toward the minor.
- A minimum 2.00 cumulative GPA is required in the minor.
- Courses graded Pass/Non-Pass may not count toward the minor.
- No more than 3 credit hours graded Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory may count toward the minor.
MINOR APPROVAL AND FILING
Departmental approval is not required when a student completes the minor as described above.
The minor program form must be filed with the student’s college or school counselor no later than the time the student submits the graduation application. After the minor has been filed, changes must be approved by the Department of Economics.
