Economics Major Requirements


BACHELOR’S DEGREE IN ECONOMICS

A = Bachelor of Arts course S = Bachelor of Science course

Pre-requisites: MATH 1130A or MATH1148A (or higher) – 3 to 4 credits MATH 1131S or MATH1151S (or higher) – 3 to 4 credits

 STAT 1450A or ECON 3400A (or higher level of Statistics) – 3 to 4 credits 

STAT 2450S (or higher level of Statistics) – 3 credits ECON 2001.01/.03 – 3 credits

Major CORE Requirements: ECON 2002.01/.03 (Principles of Macroeconomics) – 3 credits 

ECON 4001.01A/.02S/.03S (Intermediate Microeconomic Theory) – 3 credits 

ECON 4002.01A/.02S/.03S (Intermediate Macroeconomic Theory) – 3 credits

 ECON 4400A (Elementary Econometrics) – 3 credits ECON 5410S (Econometrics 1) – 3 credits 

ECON 5420S (Econometrics 2) – 3 credits *The .01 versions of Intermediate Micro- and Macroeconomics denote an algebra-based course for Bachelor of Arts students, whereas the .02 versions denote a calculus-based course for Bachelor of Science students. The .03 versions are honors courses.

Major Electives: Any 3000-level or higher (except 3400 and 4400) – 9 credits

 ECON 5850 or ECON 5860 or ECON 5870 – 3 credits Any other 5000-level or higher (except 5410 and 5420)– 3 credits

Major Writing or Thought Course: *The Economics Department sets this requirement because many of the jobs that economics majors take require writing skills on economic subjects. Since many of the Department’s courses are oriented toward problem-solving and involve little writing, it is helpful for majors to get this additional experience in writing on economic topics. 

ECON 2367.02 (Current Economic Issues in the United States) – 3 credits or ECON 5130 (Economic History of Western Europe) – 4 credits or ECON 5140 (Economic History of the United States) – 4 credits
