Study Documents Economic Impact of Federal Research Spending

The scientific research conducted at Ohio State and other universities isn't often viewed as a short-term economic stimulus program — but it does fulfill that role along with its many long-term benefits, according to new research co-authored by an Ohio State economist. In a study published this week in the journal Science, researchers examined spending at nine of the 15 universities that compose the Committee on Institutional Cooperation, including Ohio State. The results suggest that federal funding of research has a wide impact on the local and national economy, said Bruce Weinberg, co-author of the study and professor of economics at Ohio State.
