The department's graduate student teaching award selection board, the Director of Graduate Studies and the Director of Undergraduate Studies, screened Graduate Teaching Associate (GTA) records to select winners of the 2015 Departmental Citation for Excellence in Teaching (DCET) and Graduate Associate Teaching Award (GATA) in Economics. The L. Edwin Smart Fund has made cash awards available to honor graduate students' teaching excellence.
The DCET is an award to recognize GTAs who have excelled in their classroom instructional duties, such as teaching independent sections, coordinating several recitation sections as head GTA, and exceptional performance in conducting recitation/discussion sections. The Graduate Associate Teaching Award in Economics (GATA) honors GTAs who excel in teaching "independent" lecture courses.

G.S. Maddala Student Prize in Econometrics
The Maddala Prize Selection Committee, professors Jason Blevins, Mehmet Caner, Robert de Jong (chair) and Lung-fei Lee, awarded this year's G.S. Maddala Student Prize in Econometrics to Wei Shi and Kai Yang. Each of them has been presented with a cash award in the amount of $750. The committee judged that both students submitted high quality work in econometrics and expects that both papers will be published in due course.
Wei Shi’s paper extends existing work on spatial dynamic panel data and allows individual and time effects to appear in more ways than just the conventional additive way. The committee was impressed with the author's use of perturbation operator theory for the derivation of some of the results.
Kai Yang worked on a simultaneous equation spatial autoregressive model. He can establish the usual rank condition for this model by relating the structural parameters to a quasi-reduced form system which is a multivariate SAR system. He also worked out the QML estimation for this model.
The committee has been delighted with the high quality of past and present submissions.
