Ohio State welcomed several hundred middle school students from nine Columbus City Schools on November 6, 2019, for the Breakfast of Science Champions. The students took part in hands-on science activities that engaged them in a day of fun, interactive learning. Nine sites around campus served as hosts to the students, who visited laboratories and facilities; met faculty, staff and Ohio State students; and participated in scientific investigations.
The Department of Economics and the Experimental Economics Laboratory was one of the nine sites that hosted middle school students. Professor P.J. Healy, University Chaired Professor of Applied Economics John Kagel and Associate Professor Ian Krajbich were excited to provide students from Hilltonia Middle School with an opportunity to see what it's like to be an economist at Ohio State. Students participated in several activities to demonstrate economic phenomena including supply and demand, the winner’s curse and strategic thinking. The students were also shown the Experimental Economics Laboratory, where our faculty and students run experiments, to explain how the experimental approach can be used to understand the economics. They participated in three simulated experiments to see the economic lessons in action.
